Spain PM urges accountability for Gaza genocide

(MENAFN) Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez emphasized Wednesday that those responsible for the devastation in Gaza “must be held accountable,” highlighting that justice is essential for lasting peace. His remarks came during an official visit by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to Madrid.

Speaking at La Moncloa Palace on Human Rights Day, Sanchez noted the symbolic nature of the occasion, marking the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. He stressed that human dignity is “an unconditional, unique and non-negotiable value.”

Sanchez described 2025 as “a terrible year for the Palestinian people,” pointing out that nine out of ten homes in Gaza are now uninhabitable and that “thousands of lives and families” have been destroyed. Citing UN data estimating over 50 million tons of rubble across Gaza, he acknowledged that physical reconstruction is possible but warned that the greater challenge lies in “rebuilding hope” and ensuring that peace is more than “a brief parenthesis between wars.”

Even after the ceasefire, Sanchez noted, civilians continue to endure suffering. “Even today, after the ceasefire (declaration), Palestinians in Gaza are still suffering attacks … We need real peace. Those responsible for this genocide must be held accountable,” he said.

The Spanish leader reaffirmed his country’s support for a two-state solution and outlined three priorities: keeping the Palestinian crisis in public consciousness, assisting the Palestinian Authority in shaping future governance, and coordinating with European, Arab, and international partners to create security conditions capable of ending violence permanently. He also highlighted strong public support in Spain for recognizing the state of Palestine.

Sanchez concluded by stressing that Spain and Palestine “will always walk hand in hand,” expressing hope that Abbas’ visit would strengthen bilateral ties, foster solutions within international law, and build bridges between the countries.

Abbas thanked Spain for recognizing the Palestinian state and supporting efforts to broaden international recognition while advancing the two-state solution. He reiterated commitment to UN resolutions and international law, calling for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Earlier Wednesday, Abbas met Spain’s King Felipe VI to discuss bilateral relations and the latest political and humanitarian developments in Palestinian territories. The Palestinian president arrived in Spain on Tuesday for a two-day official visit.
